Let’s just say it’s been a rocky start to the new year. And as a result, the demand for residential solar solutions has seen a spike in interest on a scale that has never been witnessed before.
“Are you shedding me??” has been the reaction of most, to loadshedding in South Africa. And we understand the frustration wholeheartedly. The court is suddenly in session with Eskom and the Government facing very serious challenges in alleviating the public’s demand for answers. But the facts are that even if a solution is found, it won’t be immediate and it won’t be instantly achievable to save the state of our national energy grid.
Providing access to residential solar solutions is what we, at Versofy, are all about. Encouraging, and enabling South Africans to join the energy revolution whilst illuminating your way to more affordable options for solar financing. When? Right now!
Cape Town Responds
Some very positive news amidst this crisis is that the City of Cape Town has issued and implemented means for solar users to earn money for their contributions towards the grid – through a net metering agreement which will take effect later in 2023.
As reported by Business Tech in January 2023 , NERSA has agreed to pay R78.98c/kWh to power sellers with the city raising them an additional 25c/kWh incentive on top of this. So at R79.23/kWh, residents in CT can hopefully expect some cash back after the wise investment residential solar solutions.
What the Net Metering Agreement entails
NERSA has “steadily been laying the groundwork to enable payment for excess small-scale power, including:
- Dropping a policy requirement for power sellers to be ‘net consumers’ of energy, which previously only allowed for municipal bills to be credited for excess power, instead of actual cash payments;
- Commencing a wheeling trial for commercial and industrial users, which is helping to iron out technical and billing issues ahead of mass-scale rollout;
- Allocating R15 million budget to pay for energy generated by small-scale embedded generators for the remainder of this financial year until June.”

We often hear complaints within social circles that prove the stigma still exists, that installing solar requires major upfront capital. Capital that can only come by bonding it through the bank or costing you well over R200 000 in cash. So here’s the best news yet:
It won’t. Not when Versofy steps onto the field with a fortitude of well-calculated solar finance solutions and plans to consider. Plans that lower the barrier of entry into the market to accommodate the pockets of many more everyday citizens.
